Iowa gymnasts react to Simone Biles leaving Olympic team final

The news that Simone Biles dropped out of the team competition in the Olympics Tuesday morning sent shockwaves through the local gymnastics community. I was surprised when I first found out. I thought she would never do that, said gymnast Chloe Williams of Chow s Gymnastics and Dance. Williams is not alone.We spoke with a number of young gymnasts outside of Chow s in West Des Moines Tuesday morning.They say Biles was carrying the weight of USA gymnastics on her shoulders. Biles admitted in a post-competition news conference that she was not in the right place mentally to compete. Mental is not there, Biles said.The young gymnasts we spoke with know Biles was under a lot of pressure. I just think we all have our lows and our downs, said Chow s gymnast Caroline King.Despite some disappointment, Biles has not lost her idol status nor her importance and what she means to gymnastics. Candy Engstler said her Tuesday morning started very early. “They called me from the nursing home about 4 a.m. and said she had passed,” said Jim and Wanda Wold’s daughter Candy Engstler. She and her sister then went to the nursing home in Garner to be there when his father was told his wife, their mother, had passed away. “He folded his hands with both of us on either side and said ‘thank you, Jesus. Thank you for taking her and would you please take me, ” Engstler said. Hours later he got his wish. “About 7 (a.m.) I got the call he also passed,” Engstler said.

Leave your pet at home : ARL, Des Moines police rescue four dogs from hot cars

By Marcus McIntosh     DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI) The Animal Rescue League of Iowa urged central Iowans to protect their pets Tuesday after it rescued four dogs from hot cars over the weekend. According to the ARL of Iowa, Animal Services Officers and Des Moines police rescued two dogs Saturday from a car parked at Blank Park Zoo after temperatures inside the vehicle reached 109 degrees. The ARL said it rescued two more dogs that day from a vehicle parked at Merle Hay Mall. Each dog owner was charged with two counts of neglect. All four dogs received treatment to help return their body temperatures to normal.
