The year 2020 started off hopeful enough.
We’d welcomed our third son three days before Christmas 2019. The new year found me and my husband slogging through the newborn days bleary eyed, exhausted, but entirely enamored with our healthy baby boy.
In January, our family enjoyed “our” month as we always do. All of us except the baby – me, my husband and our two oldest sons – were born in January, my birthday last in the lineup. Our wedding anniversary is the third day of the month. For us, January sets a tone of love, celebration and unity that buoys us through the first part of the year, brightening even the grayest days of winter.

RICHMOND â Princess Blanding, the sister of Marcus-David Peters, who was fatally shot by Richmond police in May 2018, has officially announced a third-party bid for governor of Virginia.
Blanding launched her campaign Tuesday in a news release and video, embarking on a candidacy under the banner of the newly formed Liberation Party that will emphasize public safety and racial and economic justice, among other progressive reforms.
In the wake of her brotherâs death, Blanding founded Justice and Reformation, a grassroots organization advocating for mental health care and accountability in policing. Most of the groupâs efforts centered in Richmond, but this year Blanding worked closely with members of the General Assembly to propose legislation like the âMarcus Alertâ that establishes a statewide response system for those experiencing mental health crises.
Criminal justice activist Princess Blanding announced a bid to become Virginia’s next governor Tuesday as a member of the new Liberation Party. Her announcement comes two and a half years after her brother, Marcus-David Peters, was fatally shot by a Richmond police officer.
