Author: Local 5 News Updated: 10:32 PM CDT July 19, 2021 DES MOINES, Iowa Another Des Moines City Council meeting disrupted by protesters resulted in several individuals being removed from the Council Chambers and arrested Monday evening.  According to the Des Moines Police Department, three adults were arrested Monday night and a juvenile was released to parents and referred to Juvenile Courts on Criminal Trespass.  Those arrested include:  Kathleen Galloway-Menke, 47, of Johnston for Interference with Official Acts Jacob Grobe, 42, of Des Moines with Interference with Official Acts Police said additional or amended charges may follow. 

City Council approves new Fareway store in Des Moines Beaverdale neighborhood

Only one person from the Beaverdale neighborhood showed up to the vote Monday morning. Author: Lakyn McGee Updated: 7:27 PM CDT July 12, 2021 DES MOINES, Iowa Monday morning, the Des Moines City Council approved a plan to officially build a Fareway Meat Market in the Beaverdale neighborhood. The store, which will be located at 2716 Beaver Avenue, had a few bumps in the road before being unanimously approved. The Des Moines Planning and Zoning Commission voted 7-3 on June 3 to deny the request to redevelop the lot formerly belonging to U.S. Bank Mortgage.  Once Monday morning came, only one Beaverdale resident showed up to the meeting.

Former Des Moines Gordmans converting to self-storage despite petition

An old Gordmans on Des Moines east side is slated to become a storage unit, but residents say they d prefer something else. Heather Chamberlain, a long-time east Des Moines resident, has been leading a petition both online and door to door to stop the development, saying it isn t what east siders deserve. In total, she s collected nearly 1,400 signatures. We need a Fareway or a Price Chopper over there, Chamberlain said. Not another storage unit. The old Gordmans, located at 2590 Hubbell Ave., closed early last year and has remained vacant ever since. It wasn t until March that the building was approved to be converted into a storage unit by the Zoning Board of Adjustment.
