Central College Continues Black History Month Events

Central College continues to celebrate Black History Month with activities and events through the end of the month. The Crier and DutchConnect will highlight African American history and culture that challenges broadening awareness and understanding of the experiences of others. Content will include a variety of facts, articles and videos to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of African Americans. The Zuzu African Acrobats will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, in Douwstra Auditorium. A link to the livestreamed event will be provided in The Crier and Dutch Connect. Originating in Mombassa, Kenya, the Zuzu African Acrobats perform traditional acrobatics set to high-energy beats, all wrapped up in a cultural experience that is truly representative of the coastal regions of Kenya. The group has appeared on America’s Got Talent and performed at Superbowl LIII.

The Crier and DutchConnect will highlight African American history and culture that challenges broadening awareness and understanding of the experiences of others. Content will include a variety of facts, articles and videos to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of African Americans. Angel Del Rio, Class of 2021, will present the Redlining Exhibit at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, in Room 204 of Cox-Snow Music Center. Del Rio will discuss the “Undesign the Redline” Exhibit created by the Polk County Housing Trust in Des Moines. T

Central College Honoring MLK Legacy With Campus Activities

Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. day, honoring the most famous figure from the battle for racial equality in the 1950s and 60s in the United States. Central College students and faculty will honor his spirit of Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and work with activities this week. King visited campus in March of 1967, an important milestone in the history of the campus. Mary Lubbers Montgomery is the daughter of then-Central President Arend “Don” Lubbers, who invited King to campus. Montgomery was eight years old at the time. “I remember waiting impatiently for him to arrive at our home, and when he finally arrived, of course my brothers and I were instructed to use our manners and how to act and how to introduce yourself to someone or greet someone,” Montgomery says. “So I stuck out my hand as Dr. King came through the door, and I was mesmerized, of course, seeing him.”
