Whakatōhea negotiator Maui Hudson says a High Court judgment that iwi and hapū should be granted customary marine title from the Ōhiwa Harbour through to Ōpōtiki and beyond is testament to the foresight of its rangatira and the commitment of claimants.
In the first judgment under the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act, Justice Peter Churchman found a continuous connection with the coastal space, despite interruption like land confiscations and the activities of territorial authorities in issuing resource consents.

Treaty negotiations have brought Te Whakatōhea closer to a settlement for past grievances, and also closer to a digital future.
For the Eastern Bay of Plenty iwi s lead negotiator, building the iwi s digital capabilities is now a vital part of its future. We were really aware, as we were entering our treaty settlement process, that the things that are going to create opportunities for our rangatahi in the future, are not only infrastructure on the whenua and infrastructure in the moana, but infrastructure in the rangi, the cloud, the internet and the digital capacity, lead negotiator Maui Hudson said.

ÅPÅTIKI, 04 February 2021: A North Island iwi has successfully progressed its Te Tiriti o Waitangi negotiations during the global pandemic by shifting its communications online and prompting it to investigate Internet access for whÄnau through the Settlement process.
While the nation was âstaying home and staying safeâ, the WhakatÅhea Pre Settlement Claims Trust (WPCT), who relied primarily on face to face communications through hui, turned to social media to keep whÄnau updated on Settlement negotiations and at the same time reaching out to whÄnau in a challenging time.
Graeme Riesterer, Chairman of the WhakatÅhea Pre Settlement Claims Trust says whÄnau of all ages were forced into using digital communications to connect and get their Covid19 updates through lockdown.

New Zealanders and Europeans have overwhelmingly rejected
the genetically engineered new biotechnology (NBT) of gene

In 2019 Dr. Maui Hudson, Waikato

were strongly opposed to any commercial release of
gene-edited organisms and believed that we need strong

A just released EU survey of 9000
people on gene drives (GD) found there was overwhelming
support for a moratorium on gene drive technology. The
respondents said that the risks are too high as there is no
