Itching for a weeklong getaway after one too many winter days trapped inside, I found myself scanning flights in search of somewhere warm. My interest was immediately piqued when I stumbled upon a nonstop round-trip flight to Oʻahu on Hawaiian Airlines. I spent much of 2019 flying back and forth between the East Coast and Oʻahu for a work assignment and quickly fell head over heels for the island’s beautiful scenery and laid-back vibe. It had been almost a year since my work travel came to an abrupt halt and this flight to Honolulu was calling my name.

While leaving Costco one day in October 2016, Mitzi Toro looked down at her phone to see her website had crashed and her Instagram account was flooded with hundreds of messages all because of a personal Instagram endorsement by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson on one of his buzzworthy “cheat days.”
“This is 16 ounces of handmade, hand rolled slap someone in the face ’cause it tastes so good decadent and dangerous chocolate chip cookie. … from one of my fav cookie spots in the world,” he shared with his 119 million followers. The post turned a modest Maui baker into an Island novelty, and set Toro on course for cookie stardom.

The Sea House Restaurant at Napili Kai
When my friend Maria said, “OMG! Her food reminds me of [a certain Top Chef’s] creations,” I knew I had to taste chef Sam Basques’s dishes. And her steak crudo and ‘ahi poke-tini (pronounced po-kay-tee-nee) definitely met the criteria for onolicious delight.
For the steak crudo, the New York strip was cooked rare then sliced thin and served with Guamanian finadene, a Chamorro sauce akin to salsa. With just the right amount of tartness steeped in umami, the sauce tastes of tamari, vinegar, jalapeños and onions, and the dish is finished with a seven-spice chili oil. It paired perfectly with an ice-cold Bikini Blonde from Maui Brewing Company.

PUKALANI A new small business has a big goal of bringing Maui residents together when the pandemic has forced them apart.
Owners of Mahalo Aleworks a 3,500-square-foot taproom and brewery slated to open in April at Kulamalu Town Center said their location will be intimate and communal, where people can connect over 100-percent local-made beer.
