Apr 1, 2021 The Maui County Charter Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m. today to discuss the areas of Na Wai ‘Eha, Kahului and Pu’unene. The commission convenes every 10 years to review the Maui County Charter, the guiding document for local government. Over the next couple of months, the commission will hold meetings to gather public input on the charter and county operations. In lieu of going to different areas of Maui as the commission has in the past, the commission is designating different areas of Maui to encourage each community to come and share their recommendations, though anyone may attend and testify.

The Maui News The Maui County Council is seeking applications for the 2021-22 Maui County Charter Commission by noon Feb. 1. A charter amendment approved in last year’s general election requires the mayor to appoint two and the council to appoint nine of the 11-member charter commission by March 1. The charter commission convenes for 16 months every 10 years to review and consider revisions to the Maui County Charter the local government’s constitutional document. “The charter commission can propose an entirely new county charter, propose piecemeal charter amendments or maintain the status quo,” Government Relations, Ethics and Transparency Committee Chairman Michael Molina explained in a news release Tuesday.

The Maui News A Maui County Council committee will hold a special meeting at 9 a.m. Tuesday to discuss the process for selecting the 2021-22 Maui County Charter Commission. Council Member Mike Molina, chairman of the Government Relations, Ethics and Transparency Committee, explained in a news release that the commission is set up every 10 years to review the Maui County Charter, the guiding document for county government. In November, voters approved a charter amendment that allows the mayor to appoint two and the council to appointment nine of the 11-member commission by March 1. Previously, the mayor had appointed all 11 with council confirmation.
