One of the most remarkable and memorable experiences of my teenage years in the mid-1960s occurred when my uncle started a project that was to involve a year’s long commute from his home in New Orleans to Shreveport.
Uncle Edgar’s mission: spearhead the formation of a medical school in Shreveport. Dr. Edgar Hull, MD, was already a legend amongst physicians who had trained at LSU Med School in New Orleans where he was associate dean. He was also known as being very persuasive with the people who controlled the purse strings at the Governor’s Mansion and in the Legislature.

Our Miller family’s history has always been interesting to me, so I was happy to be presented with a project requiring research into our farm’s history.
Besides, I’m retired, it’s the dead of winter and I’m on restrictions while recuperating from surgery. What else did I have to do?
The project was to document that our family has owned, resided upon and worked this one particular farm in Hancock County, W.Va., continuously for 100 years or more, to qualify it as a West Virginia Century Farm, an award given through the Soil Conservation Service.
