KOLKATA: Three of the four people killed in CISF firing at Sitalkuchi in north Bengal’s Cooch Behar during polling on April 10 took bullets in the chest while the fourth suffered a head injury inflicted with a blunt object, according to preliminary post-mortem reports.
Sources quoted the autopsy report of Hamidul Haq, a 28-year-old mason accused of trying to snatch firearms from CISF personnel, as saying that he was shot from a distance of around 10 metres. No senior official would comment on the findings.
A special investigation team of the state CID is probing the case and the Calcutta HC has listed the matter for hearing on May 5. Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said a “fair probe” would “lay bare the conspiracy behind this genocide”. CM Mamata Banerjee said in her election rallies on Monday that “bullets needs to be avenged with ballots”.

NEW DELHI:
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, hitting out at the Centre s new vaccine policy and terming it hollow, without substance and a regrettable show of evasion of responsibility.
The central government on Monday announced that everyone above 18 years of age will be eligible to get vaccinated against COVID-19 from May 1, liberalising the vaccination drive to allow states, private hospitals and industrial establishments to procure the doses directly from manufacturers.

KOLKATA: Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Sunday cancelled all her scheduled “big rallies” in Kolkata in view of the Covid surge, restricting herself to just one meeting and fewer gatherings within a limited time in districts “where cases are lower”. She also urged her party colleagues to scale down their campaign in parts of Kolkata that will go to polls in the next two phases on April 26 and 29.
Speaking to a private TV channel, Mamata said her rally in north Kolkata’s Beadon Street on April 26 would be her only one in the city. Earlier in the day, Mamata wrote to PM Modi, flagging doctors’ concerns about “extremely scarce and uncertain” supplies of Remdesivir and Tocilizumab, two key medicines used to treat Covid-19. She also urged him to look into the “scarce and erratic” flow of vaccines into the state and ensure steady oxygen supply.
