GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. â We all remember the protests that broke out around the United States in response to the death of George Floyd.
That includes here in Grand Rapids where dozens of buildings were damaged.
The Grand Rapids Police Department says it has spent the last year working to gain the trust of the public.
At the same time, the Grand Rapids Public Museum is collecting the boards that were used to cover broken windows, as a piece of history.
âWhat we had the night of May 30 was not that it started out as a peaceful protest, it quickly evolved into a situation where a lot of lives were put in danger. There was a lot of property destruction,â says Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Payne.

The Grand Rapids Public Museum was awarded a $100,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for the prototyping of a web-based, mobile game that explores the history of the Grand River.
The National Endowment for the Humanities’ (NEH) Digital Projects for the Public grants support projects such as websites, mobile applications, games and virtual environments that significantly contribute to the public’s engagement with humanities ideas.
“The museum is honored to have been awarded this grant to continue using technology to make history, science and culture more accessible for the community,” said Alex Forist, GRPM’s chief curator. “Our team has been working diligently to adapt to an increase in demand for digital cultural resources by families, students, educators, historians and more, and this grant allows us to test out experiences, to learn what resonates best with the public, to encourage further curiosity

Gerald R. Ford International Airport Authority named Kent County Commissioner Emily Brieve to its board of directors.
She will serve a three-year term in the general oversight of the airport alongside six other board members, including board chair Dan Koorndyk and vice chair Floyd Wilson Jr., who were reelected to their roles. Birgit Klohs was newly elected as board secretary.
“I’m honored to join the board of the Ford airport, which is a cornerstone of our region,” Brieve said. “The airport serves a critical role by connecting West Michigan to the world and by serving as an economic catalyst for our region. I look forward to contributing to the board as we continue to establish the Ford airport as an industry leader.”
