ND lawmakers examine tax credit plan for private students

By Doug Barrett Mar 10, 2021 8:20 AM A Senate committee is considering a bill that would give parents who send their children to non-public schools, or home-school, a tax credit.  It would be $500 per child.  That bill – HB 1281 – has already passed the House on a 50 to 44 vote. Grand Forks Superintendent Terry Brenner told lawmakers the bill will divert approximately $6 million dollars of North Dakota public funds into private, non-public schools or home schools.  Brenner says that along with flat per pupil payments sends the wrong message to public schools. “During the 2017-19 biennia, Grand Forks Public Schools experienced a flat per pupil payment. Should the legislature repeat that formula for the 2021-23 school years, and approve HB 1281, our district will be left with no choice other than to increase class size, reduce the number of teaching and support staff and course offerings, and delay every expenditure “non-instructional” related during the forese

Grand Forks school district seeks public input on facilities

Feb. 26—Grand Forks school administrators have launched a communitywide survey to gather public input on improving the district's facilities. The survey, available online, is open through March 5. GF middle school phy ed teacher gets ND award

By Pat Sweeney Feb 2, 2021 8:49 PM Randy Votava, physical education teacher at South Middle School, has been named the North Dakota Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) Middle School Teacher of the Year.   The Middle School Physical Education Teacher Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated continuous dedication to the advocacy and enhancement of student learning in physical education at the middle school level. The nominees, by outstanding teacher performance and style, have personified the concept that the effort made to enrich the goals and objectives of physical education is a labor of love, inspired by commitment and dedication.   Votava began teaching in 1992 and taught elementary physical education from 1992-2008, transitioning to the middle school level in 2008.
