GREENFIELD Deputy Police Chief Mark Williams is preparing for both a new year and a job with a new force.
The 21-year veteran of the Greenfield Police Department has accepted the chief position in East Longmeadow and is set to start Jan. 19, four days after his last shift in Greenfield.
“It was a really hard decision. It was emotional. A lot of tears were shed by me, in talking with people about it,” he said this week. “It’s more than just a job. But after a lot of thought and prayer and speaking with a lot of important people in my life, I feel very comfortable and assured this is the best decision and the right decision for my family.

MONTAGUE Instead of his usual visit to Turners Falls, Santa will this year be touring the five villages of Montague in a socially distanced format.
In more typical years, Santa can be found at the winter festival, “It’s a Wonderful Night in Turners Falls,” in early December, where he rides into town on a fire truck, then meets local children and takes photos.

The Sawmill River Run, a yearly New Year’s Day race in Montague, has been changed to a virtual format this year to accommodate the pandemic.
The race is still a 10K distance, but participants are encouraged to create their own routes, and can run at any time within a window of four days. Race times can be submitted online either manually, or through certain fitness tracker apps, according to Montague Parks and Recreation Director Jon Dobosz.
