GREENFIELD Deputy Police Chief Mark Williams is preparing for both a new year and a job with a new force.
The 21-year veteran of the Greenfield Police Department has accepted the chief position in East Longmeadow and is set to start Jan. 19, four days after his last shift in Greenfield.
“It was a really hard decision. It was emotional. A lot of tears were shed by me, in talking with people about it,” he said this week. “It’s more than just a job. But after a lot of thought and prayer and speaking with a lot of important people in my life, I feel very comfortable and assured this is the best decision and the right decision for my family.

Mark A. Williams will replace Police Chief Jeffrey Dalessio, who announced he will retire on Jan. 15 after serving with the police department for 40 years. Dalessio was promoted to head the department four years ago during a controversial hiring process.
Williams started his career in policing 24 years ago and has served on the Greenfield Police Department for 21 years. He was promoted to deputy chief in 2014, said Mary E. McNally, the town manager.
