AN industrial packaging manufacturer has been fined £100,000 after workers disturbed asbestos during demolition works at its Ellesmere Port factory. Greif UK Limited had contracted Chester-based C Facilities Support Limited (CFS), who have been fined £7,000, to dismantle a large industrial oven from its Oil Sites Road premises between March 1 and May 31, 2019. During demolition works asbestos was suspected in the oven gaskets and rope seals, which was confirmed by a sample survey, Manchester Magistrates’ Court heard last month. However, despite both companies being aware of this, demolition works continued. The court heard that Greif UK Limited had instructed a worker to clean the area works without knowledge of the asbestos containing material or suitable control measures in place.
