Spanning Sunday, July 11 through Tuesday, July 13, the 2021 MLB draft marked another gradual step of the sports world returning to relative normalcy. Caveats were still undoubtedly present; the event overlapped with MLBâs All-Star Break in July rather than its typical slot in early June. Reported by Baseball Americaâs J.J. Cooper in early April, the delayed start was supplemented by the announcement that commissioner Rob Manfred and the MLBPA had settled on a 20-round draft. TROY, Ala. – Troy linebacker Carlton Martial has been named the Sun Belt Conference Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and four total Trojans were selected to the SBC Preseason All-Conference Team, the league announced Tuesday in advance of Sun Belt Media Day later this week.
It’s been a busy offseason already for Martial, who was named the No. 41 player in the country and a second team All-American by Pro Football Focus. Additionally, he was selected to the Bednarik Award Watch List on Monday, the first of many for Martial the next two weeks. Offensive lineman Austin Stidham, defensive tackle Will Choloh and Martial were all first team selections, while offensive lineman Dylan Bradshaw was tabbed to the second team.
Kevin Kendall was a three-year letter winner at La Mirada High School, were he hit a cumulative .440/.530/.617 in 65 games. His high level of performance helped the team win back-to-back league titles and got him a lot of notice. He was named onto various honorary teams, received various accolades from local media, and was considered a prep player of interest by reputable national scouting and evaluation organizations. A good student as well as being an excellent athlete, he went to UCLA after graduating and going undrafted in the 2017 MLB Draft.
He played in the West Coast League the summer after graduating, earning All-West Coast League honorable mentions after hitting .301/.389/.410 with 7 doubles and a triple, and his experience with the Port Angeles Lefties may have helped him hit the ground running in his freshman season. LOS ANGELES – Four members of the UCLA baseball team were selected Monday during the second day of the 2021 MLB First-Year Player Draft, which consisted of rounds 2-10.
Redshirt sophomore first baseman JT Schwartz (New York Mets) and junior righty Nick Nastrini (Los Angeles Dodgers) were both selected in the fourth round, redshirt junior infielder Kevin Kendall went in the seventh round to the Mets, and junior catcher Noah Cardenas was an eighth-round selection by the Minnesota Twins.
The four picks on Monday brings UCLA s two-day total to five draft selections, as junior shortstop Matt McLain was selected No. 17 overall by Cincinnati on Sunday. UCLA s five picks are tied with Vanderbilt and Tennessee for the sixth-most of any NCAA school.
