Pune Municipal Corporation’s (
PMC) plans for disposing of unused amenity spaces coming up against citizen objection, the focus now has turned to securing the sites that are prone to encroachment and it has put the onus of this task on its
ward offices.
Around October, last year the civic body mooted the idea of deploying earmarked amenity spaces to commercial use, selling them for development. When citizens protested, it was decided to lease them out instead, with the proposal formally being submitted by the city engineer. The concept of exploring commercial value arose as at many places, the unused sites have fallen prey to encroachment.
