Twenty-one-year-old Arya Rajendran of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] was sworn in as the Mayor of the Thiruvananthapuram city Corporation, after she secured 54 votes in the 100-member council in the election held on Monday morning. She has become the youngest Mayor till date in the country. P.K. Raju of the Communist Party of India (CPI) was sworn in as the Deputy Mayor.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala s Arya Rajendran has become the youngest mayor of the country after her election to the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation at age 21. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] had on Sunday officially declared Rajendran as the party-led Left Democratic Front s mayoral candidate in the election to the post to be held on Monday.

Arya Rajendran, the 21-year-old CPI(M) candidate from Mudavanmugal ward, has assumed charge as the mayor of Thiruvananthapuram corporation, becoming India s youngest mayor.
CPI leader and Pattom counsellor PK Raju will be the Deputy Mayor in the Corporation.
Earlier, the CPI(M) had chosen Arya Rajendran as it s mayor candidate to contest in the election among councillors. After the NDA and UDF decided to field candidates for the post, an election was necessary to choose the mayor.

Twenty one-year-old Arya Rajendran on Monday became the youngest Mayor in the country, taking charge of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation after she scored a facile win in a three-cornered election to the post. A college student and a CPI-M member, she was administered the oath of office by collector Navjot Khosa at the corporation council hall. With BJP-NDA and Congress-led UDF deciding to field candidates for the Mayor s post, an election was necessitated on Monday and the CPI-M candidate garnered 54 votes, including that of independents, in the 100-member corporation. Actor-politician Kamal Hassan and industrialist and Chairman of the Adani Group Gautam Adani were among those who congratulated Rajendran on her feat.
