A CORK TD is imploring the Government to reverse what he has described as a “dangerous initiative” to allow English Language Education (ELE) schools to resume in-person classes from tomorrow.
Solidarity TD Mick Barry raised the issue in the Dáil following concerns expressed by some in the sector.
On Monday, ELE schools received confirmation from the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science that in-person classes are permitted to resume from July 19.

Met Deliveroo riders today. Wanted to hear first hand about the issues they are experiencing. These are essential workers who should be treated better. Will be following up.â Leo Varadkar (@LeoVaradkar) March 9, 2021
He said the restrictions meant many riders had no option but to work for the delivery company as other employers including large supermarkets would not employ them with such restrictions in place.
After the meeting, Mr Varadkar said that âplatform working is becoming more and more common and the services they provide like takeaway deliveries have been essential during the pandemicâ.
He said many were students and migrants adding that he would âhate to think their memories of Ireland would be of exploitation or mistreatmentâ.
