Ashland activists call on local artists to create permanent Say Their Names installation

ASHLAND, Ore. – Ashland’s Say Their Names Memorial at Railroad Park is calling on local artists in hopes of creating a permanent installation. It’s all dependent on the city of Ashland’s Art Commission. The Ashland community is partnering with SOBLACC and Base Southern Oregon. Its goal with the art piece is to create a dialogue about race within the Rogue Valley, as well as listening to black voices. “It’s a community expression. We as a community felt like we need this. We as a community felt like we wanted to do something. And show that we honor and care and we want to uplift black voices and black lives,” said Keith Jenkins, Vice President of Political Strategize.

MEDFORD, Ore. – Despite many kids already returning to the classroom, the conversation about mental health continues, as kids adjust to their new routines. During the pandemic, many kids, just like adults have faced isolation and uncertainty. Now that most kids are back in schools, faculty and teachers are addressing those concerns. But the trauma that many kids face during the pandemic still lies beneath the surface. “We’re seeing kids struggle a little bit more with emotions. It can be anything from anxiety to ADHD to depression to trauma,” said Elisa Travertini-Windbigler, “What we find is it all impacts their ability to learn”.

GILCHRIST, Ore. – A Gilchrist teacher got a big gift for his workshop. Now, he’s paying it forward. Brian Wachs is a CTE Instructor at Gilchrist High School. Normally, he has a $300 budget for the school year, but recently got a $15,000 donation. The donor, Jim Neiman, is the new owner of the town’s interior mill. He said he was impressed with Wachs class after a former student spoke so highly of their experience. The donor’s only request was for Wachs to do good things, now he is. “This is gonna open up more of those opportunities for those kids to pursue beyond what’s already going on,” said Wachs, “People in this community value this and they want to see more of it”.
