Time is ticking for Butte Creek Mill to buy water rights - KOBI-TV NBC5 / KOTI-TV NBC2

EAGLE POINT, Ore. – A surprising announcement from the Butte Creek Mill Foundation, as it could lose its historic status as a water-powered mill. Three years after the Butte Creek Mill Foundation purchased the historic Eagle Point mill, it announced Thursday the water-powered mill has no water rights. This wasn’t a deal gone wrong. The Butte Creek Mill Foundation knew it didn’t own the water rights when it purchased the mill in 2018. However, now there’s another potential offer on the table for the water-rights and that organization won’t partner with the historically water-powered mill. In 2018, owner Bob Russell sold the property to the Butte Creek Mill Foundation, a non-profit that’s now raised $2 million to rebuild the historic mill.

Rogue Valley food banks see a wave of need - KOBI-TV NBC5 / KOTI-TV NBC2

MEDFORD, Ore. – A recent Oregon State University study said more Oregonians are insecure about food than in previous years. Much of it is a result of the global pandemic. However, local food banks told NBC5 News it’s not that simple. Food banks in Southern Oregon said it depends on the region. “It does seem like some areas seem [needier] than other areas. It depends [on] what part of the state,” said Marcee Champion, Access’ Food Programs Director. She said this past year came with its challenges. “Right after the pandemic started we definitely started seeing increases. We saw spikes of up to 80%,” said Champion.

Major winter storm wreaks havoc in Siskiyou Co - KOBI-TV NBC5 / KOTI-TV NBC2

YREKA, Cali. – A huge stretch alongside I-5 flooded with cars, going nowhere after Cal Trans shut down the interstate southbound in Yreka. Many were still stuck in Yreka Wednesday afternoon wondering when they’ll ever get to their destination. “There’s nothing you really can do cause you’re just waiting, waiting in limbo,” said  Jozef Namoa who has driven a truck for 4 years. He’s used to hazardous winter conditions in places like Wyoming, but he didn’t suspect he’d get caught on I-5 Wednesday in Siskiyou Co. as he made his way to Southern California. “Sometimes you get stuck out there for 3 days, it’s pretty crazy,” said Namoa.
