It has recently come to light that four new exoplanets have been discovered that are about 200-light-years away from Earth! The discovery has been made by two high school students who were part of the Student Research Mentoring Program (SRMP) at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
As per the reports, two high schoolers, Jasmine Wright, 18 and Kartik Pinglé, 16, made the discovery and their work has been published in the Astronomical Journal. “We report the discovery and validation of four extrasolar planets hosted by the nearby, bright, Sun-like (G3V) star HD 108236 using data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). We present transit photometry, reconnaissance, and precise Doppler spectroscopy, as well as high-resolution imaging, to validate the planetary nature of the objects transiting H
