HY William Chan, an architect hailing from Sydney, has been selected for the Madrid Design Festival’sEXTRAPERLO 2021 exhibit.
A former Sustainability Award winner in 2019, Chan will feature in The Burial, a multimedia installation curated by Anne-Laure Pingreoun that is a curatorial platform for the unorthodox, which challenges the systems, structures and codes that exist in contemporary design.
Pingreoun has centred the exhibition around the legacy of 2020, what it has brought society and what it wishes to release. The curator has declared her interest in what is being created, what stays, what gets forgotten or destroyed in order to build a better version of ourselves.
Valencia studio MUT Design has designed five modular pavilions clad in scales made from leftover wood for a travelling exhibition in Spain.
The pavilions will showcase work by 50 designers in five different sections to celebrate Valencia s title of World Design Capital for 2022.
Each section – design and art, the circular economy, industry and craftsmanship, technology and the transformative economy – is housed within its own mini pavilion formed from two semi-cylinders.

These consist of four metre-high curved walls, which can be placed separately or together to create a labyrinth of winding corridors and secluded alcoves.
Benchmark and Jaime Hayon remind us of how contagious a smile can be

Benchmark introduces the Smile Stool by Jaime Hayon launching in line with Madrid Design Festival from 12 Feb – 31 Mar 2021
Designed by Spanish artist and designer Jaime Hayon for leading British furniture maker Benchmark, the Smile Stool is a joyful and expressive piece of furniture which adds a playful touch to home offices.
Celebrating the age-old traditions of craftsmanship in everyday objects, the Smile Stool combines durability and careful detailing with a generous materiality that imbues a wonderful tactility and warmth within each piece.
Crafted at Benchmark’s UK workshops from solid American cherry, the soft geometry of the seat and gently curved profile of the underside invites touch. The playful ‘Smile’ doubles as the stool’s carrying handle, while the natural grain of the timber adds to the character and expressive design of the face.
