It s New Year s Day today for the more than a billion people around the world who follow the lunar calendar, and I think we all can agree that the outgoing Year of the Rat was, uh, considerably less than auspicious.
So, hell yeah, welcome Year of the Ox! And while there s no big Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade this weekend, nor those wonderfully raucous Lion Dances of Super Saturday, we can, and will, definitely still celebrate with a feast or three.
To that end, here s an extremely non-exhaustive guide to some of our favorite restaurants around town honoring the Lunar New Year. COVID-19 has strained businesses around the country, but few communities have been hit harder than the nation s Chinatowns.
With the Lunar New Year beginning February 12, a local activist has brought light and new hope to the neighborhood.
When the sun sets over New York City s Chinatown, Mott Street lights up. Approximately 250 lanterns have turned back the darkness of winter. It s all positive vibes down here, and this is what we need for the neighborhood, said Patrick Mock.
Mock grew up in the neighborhood and manages a local bakery. He watched COVID-19 turn the area into a ghost town.

Roads flooded, widespread 50mm rainfall as south-east Queensland soaked

Brisbane roads were flooded on Tuesday as Queensland’s south-eastern corner recorded widespread rainfall in excess of 50 millimetres, which included a cancelled severe storm alert earlier in the day.
The large system formed north of Bribie Island about 8.30am and brought the wet weather, dumping 65 millimetres at Banksia Beach on Bribie Island in an hour and 53 millimetres in an hour at Kippa Ring, north of Brisbane.
