Local roundup: Monmouth softball edges Winthrop late in MVC action
Mustangs take lead in top of sixth, then turn triple play in bottom half to preserve the victory.

WINTHROP Katie Laliberte had a two-run triple and an RBI single to lift the Monmouth softball team to a 6-2 victory over rival Winthrop in a Mountain Valley Conference matchup in Winthrop on Tuesday.
Abby Flanagan had three singles and an RBI for the Mustangs (12-2), who scored the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth and three more in the seventh. Winthrop had runners on first and second in the bottom of the sixth, but a line drive back to pitcher Brooklyn Federico (six strikeouts) turned into a triple play that ended the rally.

Softball: With big hopes this season, Hall-Dale rolls to win in opener
A popular pick as a team to beat in Class C, Bulldogs get best of Ramblers to start the season.

WINTHROP The Hall-Dale softball team is hoping to be a team to beat in Class C this spring. Its first game showed why those hopes are so high.
Hall-Dale used a nine-run first inning to spring it to a 14-1, six-inning victory over Winthrop in the first game for both teams.
“I’m confident in our team that we’re going to be able to go very far this year,” said third baseman Lily Platt, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs. “We’re a really deep team. We have girls all throughout our lineup who play in the offseason, we’re all close. … I just think the biggest thing we have going for us is the connection we have with each other.”

The American Legion Auxiliary California Girls State is a leadership program designed to increase awareness and knowledge of governmental processes while teaching young women about the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of citizenship.
