First drive review: Mazda MX-30

So why, when we are looking at long waits for other EVs as manufacturers scramble to get as many as possible on sale in Europe before the big fines for missing emission targets kick in, are we one of the earliest markets to get Mazda’s? Damien O Carroll/Stuff Mazda has gone to great lengths to make the MX-30 feel like a Mazda first. Just one that happens to be an EV as well. That’s easy – Mazda is taking a different approach to greener matters by only putting vehicles on sale in markets that they will actually make a difference in. A market that derives most of its electricity from burning coal, for example, will get more fuel efficient vehicles, like hybrids (because what use is an EV if you are burning coal to power it?), while a market like ours that generates most of its electricity from clean or renewable sources get the EVs sooner.

Everything electric coming in 2021

Fancy an all-electric station wagon but also really want a Porsche? Guess what. Finally, a high-performance, fully electric station wagon! The Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo is coming, albeit without the big daddy Turbo S model. As you might expect, it adds storage space and jacks the ride up a bit for more off-roadability. Porsche is also set to introduce a less expensive base model of the sedan, simply called Taycan. It’s the first rear-wheel drive one though, so it should be good fun, despite being lower on power than the other models. Cross Turismo due here: Q4 2021 (priced from $194,900). Taycan base model due here: Q2 2021 ($173,900).

Road test review: Mazda BT-50 Limited

MAZDA BT-50 LIMITED Base price: $60,990 Powertrain and economy: 3.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder, 140kW/450Nm, 6-speed automatic, 4WD, combined economy 8.0L/100km, CO2 208g/km (source: RightCar). Vital statistics: 5280mm long, 1870mm wide, 1790mm high, 3125mm wheelbase, 18-inch alloy wheels. We like: Looks great, high quality and comfortable interior, much-improved ride, sharp pricing. We don t like: Irritatingly intrusive lane assist. With the specification and pricing of the all-new BT-50 ute, Mazda New Zealand has essentially positioned it as an alternative to an SUV. Just with a very big boot. But can a ute really be a credible substitute for an SUV? We check out Mazda’s top-spec BT-50 Limited to find out.
