Perhaps by not letting the WSL title slip through your fingers against a London rival. While Chelsea were busy punching our tickets to Gothenburg on Sunday, Manchester City quietly reclaimed top position in the league table. But with only one league match remaining for City, they need some unexpected assistance from the Blues to maintain that position. Given how ruthless Chelsea have been all season, it’s highly unlikely the Blues will hand Manchester City a lifeline, but you never know. Two victories in our final two matches will see us defend the title and win the league for the second year running.

Chelsea 4-1 Bayern Munich: Emma Hayes side first-ever Women s Champions League final

7.4k shares Victory in the final over Barcelona in Gothenburg on May 16 would be immensely well timed, with the British domestic game on the cusp of the vastly increased profile that next season s Sky and BBC WSL TV deal will bring.  But the technical excellence of the football - matching the Premier League, as this Chelsea team have often done this season - was testament to levels the women s game has reached, not just where it is going. The game had been played on a relentless edge, with Bayern s counter-attacking a source of constant jeopardy, before Pernille Harder made the critical breakthrough, six minutes from time.

What you need to understand about Chelsea FCW s 4-1 win against Bayern Munich

What you need to understand about Chelsea FCW’s 4-1 win against Bayern Munich Share this story Photo by Visionhaua/Getty Images Given the signings Chelsea have made in the last year and a half, namely Sam Kerr, Pernille Harder, and Melanie Leupolz, a run to the Champions League final might be expected. I need you to understand that this is not so. Football is never that easy, and, to add to the difficulty level, this is the most stacked the Women’s Champions League that has ever been. I need you to understand that. I also need you to understand that Emma Hayes is brilliant. She may have a tendency to back whoever she calls on in the first leg a bit too much, but there is no one better at adjusting to an opponent and dominating them in the second leg. Hayes did this against Atlético Madrid, Wolfsburg (last year’s runners up), and now Bayern Munich.

Chelsea FCW 4-1 Bayern Munich, Women s Champions League: Post-match reaction

Emma Hayes promised a performance of a lifetime from Chelsea and that’s exactly what she and the Blues provided. The good news for Chelsea started before kickoff as captain Magda Eriksson was cleared to return to the starting XI. Her inclusion was a huge boost, not only because of her individual talent, but because Sophie Ingle could now drop into a three center back backline when Bayern attacked. The Blues looked bright from the opening and took an early advantage through Fran Kirby. Sam Kerr was able to find Kirby’s run into the center of the box and Kirby expertly finished, as she has so often this season.
