PESHAWAR: As Covid-19 killed 12 persons on Tuesday in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the government is likely to close elective services at health facilities to prevent spread of infection to health workers because of the death of 14 doctors during the second wave of the pandemic.
The province also recorded 466 new Covid-19 cases, which made its total scorecard of patients 53,253 so far. Peshawar, which is second on the list of nationwide infectivity chart with 19 per cent, accounted for 232 new cases and six deaths, making its overall tally of patients and deaths 20,589 and 722, respectively. Three of the fresh deaths occurred in Abbottabad and one each in Mardan, Haripur and Dera Ismail Khan.

PESHAWAR: The coronavirus on Saturday claimed the life of another doctor in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, taking the toll of doctors who have died of the infectious disease to 28 in the province.
The latest victim was a noted female pathologist, Prof Zaibun Nisa.
She had been suffering from the viral infection for the last few days and was admitted to the Northwest General Hospital in Peshawar, where she died.
Prof Zaibun Nisa had retired as head of pathology department of the Khyber Medical College (KMC) Peshawar and later joined the Kabir Medical College Peshawar as chairperson of its pathology section.

The novel coronavirus pandemic has claimed another medical professional in the province, raising the toll of doctors and paramedics succumbing to the virus to 45.
Professor Zaibun Nisa, the head of the pathology department at the Kabir Medical College in Peshawar died of the novel coronavirus (Covid) on Saturday.
Officials of the Provincial Doctors Association (PDA), in a statement on Saturday, said that the former head of pathology at the Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH), had been admitted to a private hospital almost a week ago after becoming infected with the virus.
