Dr Sadaf Jaffer is the First Muslim Woman to Serve as Mayor in the US

IMG 5286Dr. Sadaf Jaffer’s swearing-in for her first term as Mayor (Image provided by Fatima Naqvi) Dr. Sadaf Jaffer became the first South Asian woman to serve as mayor of a municipality in New Jersey, and the first Muslim woman to serve as a mayor of a municipality in the United States. Jaffer is a Postdoctoral Research Associate of South Asian Studies at Princeton University where she teaches courses on South Asian, Islamic, and Asian American studies. She got her start in politics when she ran for local office in 2017 and won, becoming the first and only Democrat on the local government in Montgomery, NJ, in many years. In the following year, the Democratic Party won two more seats and Jaffer became the Mayor. She is now running for New Jersey State Assembly in Legislative District 16.

With a rift between two local fire departments now brought to light, Marion Township Fire Department Chief Ben Meddles wants to see change. John Bailey II, 55, of Marion died that night in the fire. When fire officials arrived on-scene, the house was already fully engulfed in the blaze with the roof collapsing. Since Bailey was located upstairs in the house, firefighters were unable to execute a rescue attempt. Meddles said this wasn t to the fault of SVFD; even if they would ve responded, Meddles said Bailey had more than likely already died before Marion Township could start applying water.

New principal appointed at Princeton High School New principal appointed at Princeton High School Frank Chmiel, the principal of Franklin High School in the Franklin Township Public School District, is the next principal of Princeton High School. Chmiel was appointed by the Princeton Public Schools Board of Education at its April 27 meeting and will take over the reins at Princeton High School on July 1. He will be paid $169,000. Chmiel replaces former Princeton High School Principal Jessica Baxter, who resigned to become the principal at Randolph High School in the Randolph Township Schools. Assistant Principal Jared Warren filled in as acting principal while the search was under way for a new principal.

LANSDALE — Borough officials are warning the public: you may see what looks like a disaster near Lansdale s SEPTA parking garage next month. Borough Manager John Ernst announced Wednesday night that the transit agency will take part, with numerous local fire companies, in an emergency drill near the garage and adjacent rail tracks on May 16. Members of the Fairmount Fire Company, along with our regional emergency service organizations, will participate in a full-scale SEPTA disaster drill, Ernst said. - Advertisement - The Fairmount, Colmar, Towamencin, and Montgomery Township fire companies, along with the Lansdale Police Department and Volunteer Medical Service Corps, will be dispatched to a train accident at the railroad crossing, near the Lansdale train station and parking garage, he said.
