Voting-reform bill due in Ohio | News, Sports, Jobs

With turnout so very low during nonpresidential years, the state should be doing everything it can to encourage people to vote. Ohio officials need to continue to uphold the integrity of the vote and make sure every valid ballot is counted. The Republican-controlled state Legislature is expected shortly to introduce an election bill. The bill hopefully will increase voting and not do the opposite. I suspect one thing that will change is voter drop boxes. The boxes didn’t exist in most counties until the COVID-19 pandemic hit last year. The U.S. Postal Service was having a variety of issues that resulted in delays. In-person voting for the primary was canceled, and a lot of people didn’t want to go to polling locations during the November election because of the virus.

But, when the pandemic struck, he and his mother Meg Glines started “Dessert Friday,” and baked something new each week. The isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic over the last year has hit many hard, but the disruption to daily routines and how services are delivered have been particularly painful for those with developmental disabilities and the people who care for them. “Much like everyone else, the pandemic has had a significant impact on people with developmental disabilities. Disruptions in daily routine, work life and social life have all occurred due to COVID-19,” said Bill Whitacre, superintendent of the Mahoning County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

Low turnout expected in Valley for primary | News, Sports, Jobs

dskolnick@tribtoday.com Turnout for the May 4 primary in Mahoning and Trumbull counties will be low, but no worse than it’s been in previous odd-numbered years, election officials say. “There’s no interest in these kind of elections, unfortunately,” said Stephanie Penrose, director of the Trumbull County Board of Elections. “These elections affect your everyday life through taxes, roads. But there’s a major lack of interest in odd-year primaries. It will go up a little in the fall election, but not where it should be.” Added Thomas McCabe, deputy director of the Mahoning County Board of Elections: “There just isn’t going to be a large turnout for this primary.”
