If only both of these cars had automatic transmissions, this would have been the perfect matchup for America’s two most iconic muscle car nameplates. Instead, we’ll have to settle for the driver of the Camaro changing gears themselves. At least both cars are stock, so the way they pull in-between shifts is what we ll be paying close attention to. 6 photos
Let’s start with the Mustang. Since this is a late-model GT variant, its 5.0-liter Coyote V8 unit puts down 460 hp (466 PS) at 7,500 rpm (the revs are going to come into play later on), together with 420 lb-ft (569 Nm) of torque. Everything is sent to the rear wheels through Ford’s 10R80 ten-speed automatic gearbox, giving the Mustang an advantage as far as this race is concerned.

Ford launched its fifth and newest installment of the Mach 1 Mustang for the 2021 model year, and on paper, it is one of the best all-around S550 Mustang packages out there. Also, this is a nameplate that hasn’t been used since 2004, which is why it now garners so much attention. 6 photos
Short of the flagship Shelby GT500, the Mach 1 is currently the most interesting Mustang you can buy. It uses the same 5.0-liter Coyote V8 unit as the GT, putting down 480 hp (486 PS) and 420 lb-ft (569 Nm) of torque, which is also what you get in the Bullitt.

If you follow street racing closely, you probably know that modern-day 10-speed Mustangs have somewhat of an advantage over most Camaros that don’t utilize a similar transmission. We’re talking about Ford’s 10R80 ten-speed gearbox (or 10L80 as it’s called in the Camaro SS), which was developed jointly by Ford and General Motors back in 2017. 6 photos
In this particular instance, both these muscle cars feature this very same gearbox, and they’re both tuned for good measure, so right off the bat, we know that it was going to be an interesting battle.
This is awkward. We don’t usually like to give out many spoilers when it comes to these types of videos, but this drag race should have never happened. The Mustang GT not only has less power than an F10 BMW M5, but it also has less torque, which is normally where muscle cars tend to have the edge when it comes to this sort of thing.
Some would say the Ford Mustang was truly reborn in the mid-2000s with the launch of the fifth-generation model. Unlike the fourth and third-generation cars, the Mustang Mk5 truly embraced its design roots with a retro-modern appearance that caught on really well not only in the U.S. but also globally.
