Accelerating Digital Transformation through Challenging Time
The Daily Star and Grameenphone Ltd. jointly organised an online discussion titled “Accelerating Digital Transformation through Challenging Time” on May 17, 2021. Here we publish a summary of the discussion.
Dr Atsuko Okuda,
Regional Director, International Telecommunication Union (ITU)
The UN secretary-general issued a report highlighting eight key pillars where digital cooperation is needed. We believe this is particularly relevant in the time of COVID response and recovery. In addition to the global vision and landscape that he described, ITU has a specific mandate to connect and be connected by 2030 called the ITU Connect 2030 Agenda which focuses on growth, inclusivity, sustainability, innovation, and partnership. Through these initiatives, we aim to achieve and support the member countries to strengthen the role of ICT. Awareness-raising is also key to narrowing the digital divide that exists in the nation.

Popular Battle Royale games PUBG and Free Fire may face a ban in Bangladesh in the near future. Citing concerns over its addiction among teenagers and young adults, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Home Affairs is working together to recommend the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, BTRC to block the two games in the country.
Mustafa Jabbar, Minister of Post and Telecommunication, however, says that his ministry has not received any directives regarding the ban. Neither me, nor my ministry, are aware of any such developments. Although we have the tools, we cannot block these sites or games on our own. We need to act on recommendations from other concerned government or law enforcement agencies. We did not receive any such recommendations as of yet, said the minister.
