INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) The state’s second-busiest interchange is scheduled to close Saturday to drivers in preparation for an 18-month project.
“We’re knocking down these bridges, rebuilding them, and so the infrastructure will be completely brand new,” Indiana Department of Transportation spokesperson Mallory Duncan said.
The North Split Interchange project is expected to close I-65 and I-70 between the North Split and Washington Street.
“If you don’t have to go downtown, we ask that you use our detour route, which is 465 all the way around,” Duncan said.
Its goal is to rebuild old roads and bridges. It’ll also improve its design.
The North Split Is Closing Soon
INDIANAPOLIS You may have noticed the orange barrels popping up on the North Split. That’s only a tiny step towards an even bigger reconstruction project that will close the North Split down.
The full closure will happen around May 15, said Mallory Duncan with INDOT. They’ll be working to rebuild bridges and roadways.
“There will be exits you can get downtown that will be open, but as far as the main interchange that’ll all be closed.”
Duncan said the full closure will last around 18 months, but exits like the Michigan St. exit will open back up before the closure.
GETTING THERE: Sidewalk accessibility in Greenfield has improved, but it still needs work

GREENFIELD –Work began in October to prepare for a major project on State Road 9 in Greenfield, which will create a new median and new turn lanes intended to make the road safer for drivers. But like many road projects in recent years, it will include a component that’s not as well-publicized. During the construction process, workers will take the time to make alterations that make sidewalks more accessible to wheelchair users.
Since 2016, the city of Greenfield has completed about 600 curb ramps that comply with standards required by the Americans with Disabilities Act. Curb ramps, also known as curb cuts, replace the sharp dropoff of the sidewalk with a sloped surface that allows people using wheelchairs to easily navigate sidewalks and cross streets. Part of the ongoing work is visible now along parts of Main Street at various cross streets.
