By Neale McQuistin Scottish scientists are set to work with South American farmers to help reduce the carbon footprint of a country with one of the highest levels of beef consumption in the world. Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Agricultural Technology Institute (INTA) of Argentina, a country in which more than 100lbs of beef per capita is eaten every year. This compares to 24lbs of beef in the UK. The MoU will see SRUC scientists share information on sustainable management practices as well as technological innovations in food production. Dr Guillermo Sanchez, manager of institutional relations at INTA, said: “We are delighted to sign this memorandum of understanding with SRUC.”
By Neale McQuistin The Institute of Auctioneers and Appraisers in Scotland moved quickly yesterday to comment following the sudden EU border restrictions. Executive director Neil Wilson said: “Auction marts and auctioneers across Scotland are continuing to liaise closely with the key industry representatives and the Scottish Government to ensure they remain fully briefed about the supply and demand in the red meat chain during these uncertain times. The impact of the EU border restrictions over the last 24 hours, as well as what might follow with Brexit, will no doubt drive some volatility within the industry, particularly around demand for produce and market prices.
By Neale McQuistin Harrison & Hetherington sold 61 clean cattle, 69 cast cows, 2,103 prime lambs and 624 cast sheep at St Boswells yesterday. Fourteen prime bullocks sold to 239p/kg and averaged 214 (-13p), while 46 prime heifers peaked at 249p to average 227p (-2p). Cast cows were similar to last week’s trade, selling to £1,418 and 183p to average 131p (n/c). Prime lambs sold to £129 and 283p/kg for Beltex lambs to average 207p (-9p) overall. Cast sheep averaged £81 overall. Heavy cast ewes sold to a top of £137 for a Texel ram and averaged £98 (+£3), while light ewes peaked at £117 for Cheviots and averaged £66 (+£3).
