H Adam Wholesalers Implicated In Fraud And Forex Externalization
Mr Mahommed Farid Sattar, Sir H Adam and Sons of H Adam Wholesalers in Zomba have been implicated in fraud and forex externalisation.
This is according to a letter dated March 17th, 2021 from the Human Rights Defenders Coalition(HRDC) which Malawi Voice has seen addressed to the heads of Malawi Revenue Authority(MRA), Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and Financial Intelligence Unit(FIU).
The reputable HRDC, which has an effective whistleblowing department, confirmed on the series of allegations they received against the Zomba based shop. “HRDC has received reports of allegations that Mohammed Farid Sattar, Sir H Adam, and sons of Zomba, who owns H Adam and Wholesalers have been trying to bribe MRA officers to enable them to evade paying taxes to the Malawi Revenue Authority.
The Malawi Revenue Authority-MRA is downplaying calls from the business sector to reopen the Voluntary Tax Compliance Window as the Covid 19 pandemic persists.
There are growing calls for MRA to consider reopening the window to boost tax revenue especially now as the Covid 19 is affecting revenue collection.
Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of the Chartered Accountants in Malawi-ICAM Francis Chinjoka Gondwe recently told that there is a threat that the 2020-2021 budget might fail to deliver because of the diminishing revenue.
Gondwe recommended several ways that could boost revenue collection, including reopening the window to allow tax-payers settle tax arrears without penalties.
