Despite a law banning marriage under age 18, Malawi is seeing an increase

14/12/2020 – by Raphael Mweninguwe Nowadays © stepmap.de In 2017 the Malawi Parliament banned marriages among children under 18, hoping to stem a tide of child marriages. The legislation was passed as an amendment to the Constitution, in an effort to strengthen an existing law setting the minimum marriage age at 18. Three years later, nothing much has changed. Indeed, the incidence of child marriage is on the rise. According to the UN Children’s Fund (Unicef), 46 % of Malawian girls are married before age 18, compared to 42 % in 2017; 9 % of girls are married before age 15. Malawi has the 12th highest rate of child marriage in the world, Unicef says.
