–This week, Rep. Salud Carbajal (D-Santa Barbara) announced the winners of the fourth annual Congressional Women of the Year Award. The six winners of this year’s award are: Yessenia Echevarria of Paso Robles, Courtney Haile of San Luis Obispo, Sr. Theresa Harpin of San Luis Obispo, Sojourner Kincaid Rolle of Santa Barbara, Arcelia Sención of Los Olivos, and Silvia Uribe of Goleta.
KCBX s Rachel Showalter reports.
From now through June 30, locals can participate in the third annual San Luis Obispo Grilled Cheese Festival.
It’s organized by the non-profit Restorative Partners, a SLO County organization that aims to help people whose lives have been impacted by crime.
The non-profit facilitates programs in the county juvenile hall, runs five sober living homes, offers mentorship, reentry programs, drug and alcohol counseling and community education.
Brandee Puett is the operations director for Restorative Partners. She said the Grilled Cheese Festival is about raising money to support these programs.
But this year, Puett said it’s also about giving back to the food industry that is working to recover after the pandemic. She said the industry is vital for supplying jobs to people who are reentering the community after being incarcerated.
GRILLED CHEESE? It s a tummy-filling pleasure first thing in the morning, when you re craving something like toast, but warmer and meltier with a strong dairy component. At dinner, the grilled cheese is the ultimate comfort food, a day-ender that says, with each chewy bite, that there s no reason to fret over what you could have done differently. But, truly and forever, grilled cheese is a middle-of-the-day staple, a lunchtime, teatime, anytime taste that is quick, satisfying, and as simple as simply saying the words cheese and bread. To honor the grilled cheese s luscious legacy, and to shine some sweetness on local restaurants, there is the SLO Grilled Cheese Festival, a multi-week happening in, you got it, San Luis Obispo. But the charming Central Coast town isn t throwing an old-school, day-long, booth-laden party for grilled cheeses. Rather.
