Detroit unveils new plans to get as many people as possible vaccinated

Starting Monday, all Michiganders 16 and older will be eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine.

Because numbers are so high and some families are returning from spring break, the Detroit Public Schools Community District is pausing in-person education.

The city of Detroit is rolling out public service announcements that feature Detroiters talking about their vaccine experience. It’s not the only strategy the city has to get every person vaccinated.
“As the weather gets nice outside, people are letting their guard down. Let’s just be honest,” said Detroit chief public health officer Denise Fair. “Our numbers are very concerning. We are headed in the wrong direction 15% percent positivity. Just a few weeks ago, we were at a mere 3%.”

Only 21% of Detroit residents have been vaccinated so far, compared to 38% in Oakland County, 38% in Western Wayne County, and 30% in Macomb County. In one month, the number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in Detroit grew by more than 1,100%, reaching 315 daily cases on Friday. During the same period, the rate of positive COVID-19 tests in Detroit rose from 2.7% to 17.9%.
Detroit Tigers pulled out a win on Opening Day and so did most Detroit restaurants in the eyes of the Detroit Health Department.
Fifteen Detroit health inspectors, partnered with Detroit police, visited about 60 establishments on Thursday and issued citations at three of them, said Denise Fair, chief public health officer for the city, speaking in the late afternoon.
Fair herself was making the rounds and was happy with the COVID-19 prevention protocols at Comerica Park, the attention to restrictions at most restaurants and of course, news of the Tigers’ 3-2 win over Cleveland.
Speaking to news media as snow fell outside the Tin Roof restaurant next to the stadium earlier in the day, she showed the Old English D pin she had under her winter coat. The stadium was at 20% capacity and she hopes to make it to the next game.

For Kilkenny’s Irish Public House, St. Patrick’s Day is typically a packed party with live music, but this year will be different.
“Since COVID, it’s not going to be even a shade of what it traditionally is,” General Manager Mike Lloyd said. “It’s actually pretty depressing.”
This is the second year Kilkenny’s, located in Traverse City, will lose out on what Lloyd said is the pub’s best time for business. Last year, Michigan restaurants and bars experienced their first shut down the day before St. Patrick’s Day as coronavirus hit the state.
