Michigan’s pubs gear up for a different St. Patrick’s Day as health officials remind people to celebrate safely

For Kilkenny’s Irish Public House, St. Patrick’s Day is typically a packed party with live music, but this year will be different.
“Since COVID, it’s not going to be even a shade of what it traditionally is,” General Manager Mike Lloyd said. “It’s actually pretty depressing.”
This is the second year Kilkenny’s, located in Traverse City, will lose out on what Lloyd said is the pub’s best time for business. Last year, Michigan restaurants and bars experienced their first shut down the day before St. Patrick’s Day as coronavirus hit the state.

HOLLAND, Mich. â Sophia Leongas credits support from customers and the City of Holland for the survival of her restaurant, The Curragh Irish Pub.
âWe re super grateful that we have this awesome patio and the extension of it into the parking spaces,â Leongas says. âThat really is what is the key for us.â She notes the city allowed additional seating for Curragh customers in parking spaces on 8th Street.
And the people came.
âWe have people sitting outside with 30-degree weather,â she says with amazement. Customers can wrap up in special Curragh blankets while sitting next to heaters. Friends pitched in to build a fence for atmosphere. âOther friends actually sewed cushions for us . so when you re sitting on the metal patio chair . your tushie stays warm.â
