Study finds possible missing link in COVID-19 patients April 10, 2021 11:09 AM Matthew Kincanon DAVIS, Calif. A newly published UC Davis paper finds what could be “the missing link” in why some COVID-19 patients recover and some don’t. A team of eight researchers said that a blood plasma biomarker discovered in hospitalized patients may not only predict the severity of adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), but further research may lead to inhibiting  the progression. They found that four compounds in COVID patients’ blood are highly associated with the disease. These compounds are leukotoxins and leukotoxin diols. ARDS is characterized by fluid build-up in the lungs and is the second leading cause of death in COVID patients, next to viral pneumonia, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information.
