Lincoln City Council votes on two substantial items

KLKN-TV The Council passed two widely talked about amendments and ordinances. February 22, 2021 10:25 pm LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) Two important items were on the agenda for Lincoln City Council Monday night. First, the council would vote on an amendment that would change an ordinance put in place back in the 90’s. It would allow first responders killed in the line of duty to receive both their pension and workers compensation. The idea of the amendment was sparked by the tragedy the Herrera family faced in September when Lincoln Police Officer Mario Herrera was killed in the line of duty. The amendment passed with out hesitation from the council.

Accused La Tiendita Shooter Released on Ankle Bracelet Monitoring

   Timothy Lopez, charged in the Nov. 26 shooting death of Derick Velarde, was released on ankle monitoring Feb. 4, following a Feb. 3 dangerousness hearing before First Judicial District Court Judge Jason Lidyard. Lidyard said the state did not meet its obligation to prove Lopez was a danger to the community and that the incident was focused on one person.     Assistant District Attorney Brittany Davila is prosecuting the case and made the argument to keep Lopez incarcerated at the Rio Arriba County Adult Detention Center, where Lopez has been since the shooting. She called three witnesses, all New Mexico State Police officers.     Agent Daniel Martinez testified that through statements he learned Jimmy Campbell rode with Derick Velarde to La Tiendita Nov. 26 and described Lopez, the man who allegedly shot Velarde.

January 11, 2021 6:03 pm LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Monday evening, Lincoln City Council voted to unanimously approve Carrie Herrera to the Citizen Police Advisory Board. Carrie, the widow of Lincoln police investigator Mario Herrera who was killed in the line of duty in September, says when positions on the board opened in late 2020, it wasn’t something that ever crossed her mind. “At first I thought no way, there’s nothing political about me, but then I did a little research, looked into it, and realized it’s not political it’s literally about being objective,” Carrie says in an interview with Channel 8’s Marlo Lundak.
