Where books matter: The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair is a haven for UAE culture lovers

SHARE After a few days attending the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, you normally amass a number of colourfully branded bookmarks. This year it’s barcodes and QR codes. There is one for the carpark, another on the ticket for the author session you want to see and, of course, there is one on your Al Hosn App stating the negative PCR test taken within 48 hours. This is what it means to hold a book fair in the age of the pandemic. Judging from the glinting eyes behind the masks of book sellers, culture lovers and thought leaders, the Abu Dhabi iteration couldn’t have come fast enough.

Gold Standard Data Shows Much Longer Droughts in West

Copy Link Rainstorms grew more erratic and droughts much longer across most of the U.S. West over the past half-century as climate change warmed the planet, according to a sweeping government study released Tuesday that concludes the situation is worsening. In 2014, a drought drove hungry bears out of the woods and down to Lake Tahoe. (Courtesy of Nevada Department of Wildlife) The most dramatic changes were recorded in the desert Southwest, where the average dry period between rainstorms grew from about 30 days in the 1970s to 45 days between storms now, said Joel Biederman, a research hydrologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Southwest Watershed Research Center in Tucson, Arizona.

I remember our fear and worry. I remember my father moving swiftly, decisively. And I remember that there was no question or hesitation to take my mother to the hospital. My father, a construction worker with a sixth-grade education, had health insurance through his union, Laborers Local 185 in Northern California. It meant we didn t have to make a choice between my mother s health and our family s financial stability. Growing up, my family didn t have much, but we did have access to health care and importantly, the peace of mind that comes with it.

Life is a byway: La Frontera del Llano offers a scenic tour of northeastern New Mexico

.... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... When it comes to population, well, as Mosquero resident and business man Pete Callahan put it, “there’s not a lot of voters out here.” But that doesn’t mean that the La Frontera del Llano Scenic Byway, that stretches not quite 100 miles from Logan to Abbott, is not without its charms. As a matter of fact, the wide-open spaces unfilled by folks, may be one of the area’s most rewarding aspects. Atop the caprock looking back at an ancient ocean along La Frontera del Llano. (Courtesy Department of Transportation) “It’s a beautiful drive,” Callahan said. “You cross canyons and the caprock of eastern New Mexico. The caprock was the shore of an ancient ocean in prehistoric times. It stretches from northern Harding County all the way down through Melrose and Grady. There’s an 800-foot difference below and above. That’s a pretty significant rise in elevation.”
