Aizuwakamatsu: Fukushima’s unnoticed Japanese crafts jewel 3 minutes read
By Maria Roldan
Aizuwakamatsu, Japan, Apr 1 (efe-epa).- Tucked between the Fukushima mountains, Aizuwakamatsu is a bucolic and unnoticed city in northeastern Japan with an artisanal tradition of lacquers and ceramics dating back more than 400 years that languishes because of depopulation.
Surrounded by rice fields and natural landscapes such as Lake Inawashiro or Mount Bandai, a stratovolcano, the town is known for its legacy linked to feudal warriors. It’s also famous for having been the scene of one of the bloodiest battles of the civil war that faced supporters of the shogunate and the emperor in the 19th century, the Boshin War, which marked the decline of the samurai.

By Maria Roldan
Tokyo, Feb 2 (efe-epa).- Japan on Tuesday extended the state of emergency until Mar.7 as the country struggles with Covid-19 infections that have strained its healthcare system even as the number of cases has declined.
“We are asking you to hang on for a little longer so that we can firmly establish a downtrend in infections,” Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga told reporters.
“We need to continue reducing the number of new cases, as well as the number of seriously hospitalized patients.”
The government imposed the state of emergency in Tokyo and 10 of the 47 prefectures, including Osaka, Aichi, and Fukuoka, on Jan.7.
