Now hiring: 30 custodian vacancies in Marion County Schools
MARION COUNTY, Fla. – It’s a tough job, but custodians are the backbone of every school district. They make sure the classrooms and facilities are clean and safe for students and staff.
Right now, the district is down 30 custodians and it’s hoping to fill those positions by the next school year when more kids will be back in the classroom.
“We have a ton of open positions. It’s been extremely difficult this year to get people in. Everybody has some fear with COVID, but now we’re getting over that and looking forward to a positive future.” Custodial Services Coordinator James LaMotte said.

Using the six-ticket concept, the largest Marion high school, West Port, would end up with roughly 3,400 attendees, or 57% capacity. Dunnellon, one of the smaller high schools, would have 1,500 attendees, or about 25% capacity.
Beth McCall, citing COVID-19 health concerns, was adamant at keeping the tickets set at six per graduate, regardless of school size. However, she relented after Campbell s detailed and spirited speech.
Ultimately the district decided to give 10 tickets to graduates at the three smallest high schools: Dunnellon, Lake Weir and North Marion.
Graduates from the two medium-size high schools, Belleview and Vanguard, will get eight tickets. Students attending West Port and Forest high schools, the two largest, will get six tickets.
The Knoxville Fire Department was dispatched to the Knoxville Pizza Hut at approximately 11:00 a.m. Thursday for the report of a kitchen fire. When crews arrived, they were informed by staff that they had used a fire extinguisher on a grease fire in one of the fryers. Crews determined that the fire had been put out, and ventilated the building.
As is procedure with establishments that serve food, the business will remain closed until it can be reinspected.
Knoxville Fire/EMS was assisted on scene by the Knoxville Police Department and Marion County Public Health.
