Study raises concern about limited immune response of transplant patients after COVID-19 vaccination
A small study from Mayo Clinic researchers raises the concern that some transplant patients may have a limited immune response after being vaccinated for COVID-19 with an mRNA vaccine. Their findings are published as a letter to the editor in the
American Journal of Transplantation.
The letter covers seven organ transplant recipients diagnosed with COVID-19 at Mayo Clinic in Florida six to 44 days after receiving either of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines that have been authorized for emergency use by the Food and Drug Administration. Two patients had received one dose, and five patients had received both doses.

Vaccines work by imitating an infection and causing the immune system to produce antibodies. Those antibodies help fight the disease in the future.
Transplant patients receive anti-rejection meds to decrease the efficiency of the immune system so they don’t reject their new organs. But these also appear to decrease the efficiency of COVID vaccines.
Preliminary research conducted on a small sample size suggests that certain COVID-19 vaccines, including Pfizer and Moderna, may not be effective for solid organ transplant patients and others with compromised immune systems.
A team of Mayo Clinic researchers studied seven organ transplant recipients diagnosed with COVID-19 at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville six to 44 days after receiving the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines. Two patients had received just one dose and the remaining five had received both doses.

FARGO One man sitting at Jason Moszer s memorial service Thursday, Feb. 11, has a special connection to the late Fargo police officer.
Hours after Moszer died, his donated organs went on to save the lives of many, including Dave Knudson, who received his heart. Knudson now speaks to groups about the importance of organ transplants.
Knudson wore a blue Moszer hockey jersey and stood as officers from the Fargo Police Department carried flags forward during the memorial service. His connection to officer Moszer and his family is one nobody predicted, or wanted.
