Demo of old Monroe fire station begins
Monroe Fire Chief Rob Wight felt a pang of sadness on Monday as he drove down Scott Street and passed by the city s old Central Fire Station.
It was hard for Wight not to think of the 21 years he spent manning the now-defunct building, which crews from Salenbien Trucking and Excavating of Dundee began demolishing this week. It s kind of a sad moment actually, driving by it and seeing it like that, Wight said Tuesday. .It served us well. It just wasn t able to serve us anymore I guess.
The demolition of the 53-year-old building is expected to be completed by the original target date of June 30, despite a delay that occurred when the original firm hired by the city to oversee the project suffered an outbreak of the coronavirus among its employees.

A Custer speaks
Chip Custer and his wife are retired and living in Arizona. He has visited Monroe “countless” times and given talks as well as participated in Custer events. He is well aware of the most recent controversy surrounding his ancestor, the general. Mr. Custer wrote three columns about his well-known name and what he thinks of those who want the statue moved or the Custer removed from the Monroe community.
So what is the cancel culture really all about? George Orwell stated it best in his classic novel, “1984”: The goal has been accomplished when “…Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book has been re-written, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street and building has been renamed… nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”
