For waste pickers, one man s trash becomes another one s treasure
By Staff Reporter
By Dominic Naidoo
Every day in South Africa, thousands of people traverse our neighbourhood streets and municipal landfills in search of trash that is otherwise deemed worthless by most of us.
These dedicated individuals pick through our waste in search of valuable recyclable materials which they collect, clean and sell to recycling companies.
This critical yet thankless profession is vital to waste management systems not only in South Africa but all over the world. This is their livelihood; they are waste pickers.
I stood outside my home in Durban last Tuesday evening, our rubbish was to be collected early the next morning, most of my neighbours place their black bags out the night before.

Wits senior lecturer Dr Melanie Samson says waste reclaimers may lose their daily income if Pikitup continues to sideline them.
Reclaimers in Johannesburg play a crucial role in waste management and recycling.
According to the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, reclaimers collect 80%-90% of all used packaging and paper that is recycled.
They also save municipalities up to R748-million a year in landfill space, they help with the recycling economy and without them, Johannesburgâs landfills would have closed long ago.
Senior Lecturer in Human Geography at the University of the Witwatersrand Dr Melanie Samson explained that the City and Pikitup have designed a charity-style project which offers official recycling work to unemployed people with no experience in the sector and private companies instead of partnering with the real recycling experts and reclaimers
Liam’s crowdfunding campaign page is direct: his “sole purpose is to survive”.
Before his diagnosis with inoperable brain cancer, Liam was a “healthy, fitness and sports minded 44-year-old, [who gave] his time and skills away freely by being a regular at charity events, fundraising for a number of organisations and more recently sponsoring amateur athletes”.
Holly, Liam’s friend, caregiver and now crowdfunding campaign manager, appeals to the crowd: “It’s time for us to come together and help this amazing man out.”
This narrative may be familiar it provides a window into the high-stakes world of medical crowdfunding. In our new research, we explore who the people behind these campaigns are and how they work to capture the crowd’s attention in a competitive environment.
