“What does it mean for a community to be safe?” Obama asked during the book club conversation. “For most of our history, policing in the African American community has meant just keeping a lid on things and keeping control and maintaining barriers and boundaries, rather than actually serving those communities.”

This year’s 26th celebration of the written word begins with the Book Prize announcements

The festival proper opens
April 17 at 10 a.m. with the help of USC’s President Carol L. Folt, featuring surprise appearances by Times writers and a performance by the USC Trojan Marching Band. Times columnist Patt Morrison will moderate.
