National companies offer incentives for employee vaccination

Publix is joining a long list of companies that have decided to provide incentives for their employees to get vaccinated – rather than mandate it. Dollar General decided to give fully vaccinated hourly employees a one-time payment of four hours of regular pay and salaried team members with additional store labor hours to reimburse them for any missed working time while getting the vaccine. Target said it would provide up to four hours of pay – two for each vaccine dose – and up to $15 each way in Lyft rides to employees needing a ride to and from their appointments.  Grocery chain Kroger’s approach is perhaps most similar to that of Publix – it will give employees a one-time payment of $100 once they receive the full COVID-19 vaccine.

COVID Florida: One year since first virus cases confirmed in February

Dr. Manuel Gordillo had been tracking the spread of the coronavirus beyond China and knew to be on alert when he visited Doctors Hospital of Sarasota in late February 2020 before encountering a patient who had been very sick for a week with pneumonia. Gordillo wanted to test the patient for COVID-19, but at the time testing was extremely limited and controlled. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention only allowed it for patients with a suspicious travel history. Gordillo’s patient hadn’t traveled outside Florida. But the testing guidelines were rapidly evolving, and late one evening Gordillo checked online and found that the criteria had changed. He awoke at 4:30 a.m. the next day and drove to the emergency room to request a test.
