Anamosa prison murders linked to staffing shortages, AFSCME says

The murders of two employees at the Anamosa State Penitentiary March 23 are the climax of chronic staffing shortages at the state’s prisons, according to a labor union that represents prison workers. Ten nursing jobs or 35 percent of the authorized nursing positions at the Anamosa prison are vacant because of lack of state funding, AFSCME Council 61 reports. There are 14 correctional officer vacancies, or about 6 percent of the authorized positions at the prison with about 850 inmates, according to the union. Statewide, Iowa’s prisons, which are 10 percent over capacity, are about 9 percent understaffed, AFSCME said in a letter sent last week to Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds and leaders of the Iowa House and Senate.
