Toxic algal blooms return to Mantua Reservoir

Health officials in northern Utah continue to warn visitors to Mantua Reservoir that toxic blooms of slimy, blue-green algae have returned to the popular summer recreation spot in Sardine Canyon. Earlier this month, the Bear River Health Department issued a warning advisory for the reservoir located near the Box Elder-Cache county line, informing people that water samples taken from the northeast boat ramp and along the north shore contained concentrations of cyanobacteria that were more than 11 times greater than what the Utah Division of Water Quality deems safe. A subsequent test on July 21 reaffirmed the findings. Cyanobacteria are microorganisms that are a natural part of fresh water ecosystems but under certain conditions can multiple rapidly, creating scums and blooms on the water’s surface and along shorelines. You may see a bird walking under water. Or a bald eagle snatch a fish from the stream. Or children playing at the water s edge. You may find a whole different world just a mile or so from your house. According to department records, however, he has a history of being written up and was ultimately fired in November for multiple violations.

MANTUA, Box Elder County The mayor of the small Box Elder County town of Mantua resigned Tuesday amid ongoing controversy over the town s police department and a budget shortfall. I have enjoyed serving my fellow citizens and the friendships I have made, Mayor Michael Johnson said in a letter of resignation posted to the town s Facebook page. My hope is that the divisiveness in the town will now stop and healing will begin, and Mantua will once again become the great town we moved into many years ago. Johnson s resignation was effective as of 1 p.m. Monday. He didn t give a reason for his resignation in the letter.
